But this year association members urged organizers to showcase the destination to all segments of the industry.
This year's event hosted participants from over 20 countries who made the 2019 convention one of the most successful yet, increasing the number of business meetings by 15% compared to 2018.A total of 684 tourism professionals were at this year’s convention, including 308 buyers and 376 suppliers. A record-breaking 4,312 business meetings took place at Cancun Travel Mart, not including site inspections and press trips organized by the area’s many hotels and all-inclusive properties. Several representatives of Mexican and Mexican Caribbean tourist destinations also attended the event.“We thank our business partners and the industry at large for the success of the 25th edition of the Cancun Travel Mart,” said Jesus Almaguer, Director General of the Cancun CVB.“This event has strengthened over the last 25 years making it one of the most important industry events in Mexico and Latin America. Attendees to The Cancun Travel Mart included major tour operators and travel agencies from the United States, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, France, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Italy, Mexico, Nigeria, Paraguay, Peru, Spain, England, Russia, and Venezuela. Tourism providers from Quintana Roo, the Yucatan, Puebla, Guerrero and Mexico City as well as hotel chains with properties in states throughout Mexico also attended the event.According to Roberto Cintrón Gómez, President of the Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres Hotel Association, the 32nd edition of the Cancun Travel Mart ended this week on a high note with over three thousand business meetings (including many held outside the convention center) that resulted in $4.5 billion worth of transactions for 2020 and the upcoming winter season.This year, the event welcomed 258 buyers and 340 providers for a total of 598 people and 80 exhibition booths, set up on the third floor of the Cancun International Convention Center.
Cintrón also pointed out the attendance of four guest state tourism secretaries (a first for the event), Yucatan, Campeche, Tamaulipas and Queretaro, seven states and more than 15 countries.Tourism providers from Quintana Roo—Cancun, Puerto Morelos, Isla Mujeres, Holbox, Contoy, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum—presented their offer alongside hotel chains from other states and Caribbean countries.According to Cintrón, the participation of the seven additional states in the Travel Mart was a response to the closing of the Mexico Tourism Board and the need for the country to find other ways of promoting tourism.Cintrón expects this participation to grow year after year, making the Cancun Travel Mart—already the second-most important travel trade fair in Mexico after Tianguis—a must for wholesalers, agents, and providers.
The Mexican Caribbean has had its share of challenges this year; however, according to the State Secretary of Tourism, this year’s arrivals have increased by 4.9 percent over those of 2018. The number of available hotel rooms has also increased by 4.7 percent for a total of 107,711 for the area, bringing in a total of $15 billion in revenue.Cancun Travel Mart 2019 reinvents itself and begins a new stage in the way of promoting tourism.
